The stage at Uhuru Gardens was bathed in dramatic amber and violet light on Saturday night. Framed by massive LED screens, the venue welcomed Congolese superstar Fally Ipupa for a massive music festival.
The event featured Congolese rumba, Kenyan live acts, and South African Amapiano across a 12-hour schedule running into Sunday morning.
While VIPs sat on white-and-gold seating on vibrant green turf with crystal centrepieces, the open lawn held thousands of chanting fans. These fans stood on the expansive grass holding up glowing smartphone screens.
Thick mist from smoke machines swept across the stage, creating a cinematic backdrop. Golden pyrotechnic spark fountains shot upward into the night sky.
A Royal Entrance
As the live beat dropped, dramatic red and white strobe lights flashed in rhythm with the brass section. Pyrotechnic cold sparks exploded from the front of the stage, filling the air with golden embers. Artificial fog rolled across the platform.
The Congolese icon stepped onto the stage to a roaring crowd. He wore an oversized, double-breasted long trench coat with sharp lapels. Dark designer sunglasses covered his eyes, while chunky gold chains and rings caught the stage lights. Confetti fell over the stage area as his dancers took their positions.
Backed by his live band and a horn section, the superstar strode slowly to centre stage. He opened with a heavy, mid-tempo Congolese rumba beat. Raising one hand to signal the crowd, he broke into a signature smooth, fluid hip-swaying routine.
Synchronised Choreography
The stage lighting transitioned into warm gold and emerald green tones. Backup dancers lined up shoulder-to-shoulder with the singer. The dancers were dressed in black leather jackets, fitted dark trousers, and red accents.
During the performance, the star transitioned to a lighter outfit. He donned a deep brown button-up shirt. However, he retained his dark sunglasses and headscarf.
The group performed a highly synchronised, high-energy dance sequence. Their movements alternated between sharp, rapid footwork and relaxed, sensual rumba waist rolls.
On the drum breakdown, the performers executed a coordinated step-back and spin. This instantly triggered a loud cheer from the front rows.
The Ultimate 'Afsana' Sing-Along
The crowd, packed across the grounds, actively sang along to his hit songs throughout the set. Bright white spotlights turned away from the stage and swept across the sprawling crowd.
Golden sparks shot up from the stage boundaries once more, illuminating thousands of raised arms.
During the track Afsana, the audience echoed the chorus lyrics back to the stage in unison. Fans on the lawn and those on the elevated VIP platforms sang together.
"Afsana, Afsana, to the left to the right, Afsana, tushuke tupande... I love you Afsana, I need you Afsana...” the entire arena echoed along with Fally Ipupa.
The singer walked down the centre runway extension. He unclipped the microphone from its stand and held it outward toward the audience. Smiling as the crowd roared the lyrics, he stepped back into a light, rhythmic shuffle. He let the live bassline and audience vocals drive the song for several measures.
