Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives Secretary General Seth Panyako leads demonstrations on their way to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission offices on September 3, 2026/EZEKIEL AMING'AA group of nurses took to the streets of Nairobi on Thursday to protest over stalled negotiations on their collective bargaining agreement (CBA), as their nationwide strike over pay continued.
Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives Secretary General Seth Panyako led the demonstrators as they marched towards the offices of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), piling pressure on the commission to address their demands.
The protesters were largely dressed in white tops, with some wearing the caps associated with the nursing profession.
Some of the demonstrators carried placards bearing messages highlighting their demands, including “Implement the 2017 RTWA,” “No CBA, No Work,” “United for Our Rights, Stronger for Our Profession” and “A Strong Nurse, A Healthy Nation.”
Others blew whistles and vuvuzelas as they marched towards the SRC offices.
The protest came a day after the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) announced plans for a mega demonstration in Nairobi as part of its ongoing nationwide strike.
The union has maintained that the industrial action will continue until the SRC issues a letter of no objection to the 2017 CBA, paving the way for its registration at the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC).
The dispute has centred on the implementation of the 2017 agreement, with nurses pushing for the government to honour the terms contained in the CBA.
Negotiations between the union and the Council of Governors (CoG) have remained deadlocked, prompting the nurses to intensify their demonstrations alongside the strike.
The latest protest brought the nurses directly to the SRC, which plays a key role in advising the national and county governments on remuneration and benefits for public officers.
