Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called out President William Ruto for failing to implement police reforms as recommended by the National Taskforce on Police Reforms.
He said it is unfortunate that Kenyans continue to witness high-handedness of the police despite the police task force, which he chaired, giving recommendations on how to restore sanity in the service.
Maraga cited the hiring of the Inspector General of Police and transparent promotion of police officers as some of the reforms required.
“Unless the independence of the police service is restored, we will not have a country,” the former chief justice said.
The task force report was submitted to President William Ruto more than three years ago and had more than 200 recommendations on police reforms.
While uniforms were among the listed recommendations, Maraga said it is unfortunate that the project is already marred by allegations of corruption.
“Whereas police uniforms were part of the over 200 task force recommendations, the attempt to implement it already marred by corruption and opaqueness,” Maraga said.
Maraga chaired the task force mandated to review the operations of the National Police Service, the Kenya Prisons Servce and the National Youth Service to improve service delivery to Kenyans and strengthen accountability.
The task force was established to identify legal, policy, administrative, institutional and operational challenges affecting the effective delivery of services.
It was also tasked with reviewing the welfare, terms and conditions of service for their personnel.
