Detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 67-year-old man after unknown assailants reportedly entered his homestead in Ekenawa Village, Ikonge Sub-Location, Nyamira County.
The deceased, identified as Alfayo Misuko Aremba, was attacked at about 11 pm on August 25.
Police officers visited the scene after the shooting was reported and said preliminary investigations indicated that Aremba had been shot three times in the hip joint with a firearm suspected to be an AK-47 rifle before the assailants left the scene.
Neighbours rushed the victim to Ekerenyo Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Three empty cartridges of 7.62x39mm calibre were recovered at three different points outside the deceased’s house.
The scene was documented and processed by Nyamira Crime Scene Investigation officers before the body was moved to Our Lady of Mercy Ibaara Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
Police said preliminary investigations had indicated a long-standing history of family disagreements involving the deceased’s family, which investigators are examining as a possible motive for the shooting.
Investigations have been launched to identify those reportedly involved and establish the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting.
Meanwhile, an unidentified man in his 40s died in the Urra River near Kimenchu Bridge in Kimongoro area, Akachiu Sub-County, Meru County.
Police officers who visited the scene found the body of the man floating in the water.
Scene of crime personnel processed the area and observed injuries to the deceased’s mouth and right ear.
Police said the injuries may have been caused by stones in the river after the man fell onto them.
The body was retrieved from the water and taken to Nyambene Level Five Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending identification and autopsy.
Police have launched inquiries to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Drowning incidents have been reported in parts of the country, amid caution to avoid similar incidents.
