Sugar millers have been given seven days to pay farmers after receiving sugarcane, failure to which they will face penalties, including interest on delayed payments. Kenya Sugar Board CEO Jude Chesire says the measure is aimed at ending prolonged payment delays and protecting growers from exploitation. Chesire says the Board is also cracking down on weighbridge fraud, with some farmers reportedly losing up to three tonnes of cane per trailer.
