Country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. The legendary singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist passed away on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.
Her team confirmed she died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Centre in Nashville, following a brief battle with cancer.
Her death came as a sudden and unexpected shock across the globe. Millions are mourning the loss of a rare cultural institution who spent more than six decades transforming herself into one of the most beloved entertainers in the world.
Who Was Dolly Parton?
Parton was born and raised in rural East Tennessee. She grew up dirt poor in a one-room cabin as one of 12 children. Despite these humble beginnings, she rose to become the undisputed Queen of Country Music.
"You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try,” Dolly Parton said in a past interview.
A Peerless Six-Decade Career
Parton was widely known for her extraordinary musical achievements, selling over 100 million records worldwide. She was a prolific songwriter who wrote more than 3,000 songs during her lifetime. Her lyrics spoke honestly about poverty, love, hard work and human resilience.
She wrote permanent classics such as "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors" and "I Will Always Love You."

In New York, the Empire State Building sparkled in pink to honour her life and legacy. In Los Angeles, fans placed flowers and memorabilia on her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In Tennessee, mourners gathered at her statue in Sevierville to pay their respects.
"Somehow she was true grace and true grit, all in one dazzling person,” Taylor Swift wrote.
Other major figures paid emotional tributes. Beyoncé said: "Dolly, you were the barometer. The north star. Bold and brilliant." Celine Dion wrote: "Dolly… you were pure light, with a kind heart and a generous spirit."
