Radio personality King Kalala has publicly addressed the double standards present in modern dating and marriage. Celebrating her 28th birthday, the outspoken media personality took to social media to share her unfiltered thoughts on how society treats women in relationships, pointing out that women are often unfairly labeled when they choose older partners.
Challenging the Double Standards
In a candid video message to her followers, Kalala questioned why women are frequently judged for dating older men, while men face no such scrutiny.
She highlighted the double standards by pointing out how critics label women who date older men as opportunists or "gold diggers", while ignoring the men's choices.
Kalala emphasized that women face intense judgment regardless of their own age or circumstances, noting that society is quick to penalise them. She argued that people should focus on their own lives rather than policing the relationships of others.
"Back at home, you guys are very heavy on not dating someone with a baby but when you relocate to abroad, you are slapped with a stepfather license of people older enough to be even your agemates, she added.”
Guardian Angel and Esther Musila as an Example
To illustrate her point, Kalala referenced the high-profile marriage of gospel musician Guardian Angel and his wife, Esther Musila. The couple has frequently faced public commentary regarding their age difference since they began dating and eventually tied the knot.
"You are very heavy saying how Guardian Angel married an older partner, yet you don’t see how his farm is fetching him up to 19 million Kenyan shillings, yet you are there surviving on minimum wage.”
Kalala used their thriving union to challenge the narrative that age-gap relationships are inherently flawed. Musila, who celebrated her 54th birthday in 2023, and Guardian Angel have continued to build a successful life together, proving critics wrong despite persistent public interest in their marriage.
Bringing the conversation back to everyday realities, Kalala pointed out that everyone is simply trying to navigate life on their own terms. She urged critics to reflect on their own actions before passing judgment on others.
"We are all the best, we are trying to survive and nobody is better than the other."
