Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe has ordered nationwide inspections of agrovet shops as the government intensifies the crackdown on illegal and unsafe pesticides. The Pest Control Products Board says unauthorised and smuggled pesticide imports have dropped by 95 percent following increased surveillance at border points and ports. Kagwe says Kenya will not allow pesticides banned elsewhere over health concerns to be sold locally, and wants harmonised controls across EAC and COMESA countries.
