Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has announced a Sh350 million investment to expand electricity access in Nambale Constituency, Busia County, as the government steps up efforts to improve rural connectivity.
Wandayi spearheaded the commissioning and launch of several Last Mile Connectivity projects being implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
Speaking during an inspection of the projects at Kochoroi Comprehensive School, Wandayi said the allocation would help bridge electricity connectivity gaps in the constituency.

He emphasised that the rural electrification programme is fully funded by the government and that connections under the current phase are free of charge.
"Our objective is to ensure equitable energy distribution to stimulate the grassroots economy," Wandayi said. "This Sh350 million injection funds long-term grid extensions, transforming rural villages into active economic zones."
The rollout includes the Mabunge Sirira Village Electrification Project, which is expected to connect nearly 300 consumers, including households, small businesses and churches.

The Kacheroi Village power project in Buhayo North/Walatsi Ward is also expected to connect about 160 units, including educational institutions.
Nambale MP Geoffrey Mulanya and Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo have backed the expansion, saying reliable electricity will support local businesses and create opportunities for young people.
The leaders said improved power access would benefit enterprises such as welding shops, salons, refrigeration businesses and agricultural processing facilities.
Wandayi also warned individuals and cartels involved in the theft or destruction of electricity infrastructure, saying the government would take action against those sabotaging transformers and power transmission lines.
The initial phases of the programme have delivered more than 593 connections, with REREC and the Ministry continuing to extend the grid to neighbouring unconnected areas.
The government says the expansion is aimed at supporting wider economic transformation in Busia County by improving access to reliable electricity for households, businesses and public institutions.
