Over 1,500 participants are expected to line up for the second edition of the Meru University Mt. Kenya Run, scheduled for September 5 at the Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), Marimba Campus.
The 14km race will headline the day’s action and is expected to draw a strong field of elite men and women runners eager to test their endurance and speed against the challenging course, with registration set at Sh2,500.
The winner in the elite 14km race will pocket Sh200,000, while the second and third-placed finishers will take home Sh150,000 and Sh100,000, respectively.
The 8km race will feature different age categories, including seniors, masters (for athletes aged 50 years and over), students and under-20 categories. The top three finishers in the 8km race will be rewarded with Sh40,000, Sh30,000 and Sh20,000, respectively.
The event will also feature an 8km Corporate Run, with registration for a team of five set at Sh100,000, an 8km CEO Challenge priced at Sh20,000, a 3km Fun Run priced at Sh5,000 and a 3km Children’s Race, with registration set at Sh2,500.
Meru University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, said the institution was delighted to stage the second edition after the success of last year’s inaugural race.
“We are delighted to welcome the second edition of the Meru University Mt. Kenya Run, building on the success of our inaugural edition last year,” he said.
He noted that the organisers are aiming for a bigger and better race this year, to build on the momentum generated by the inaugural edition.
“This year, we are looking to build on that momentum and do it bigger and better. Please register and join us for this noble event as we run for education and cancer research. The prevalence of cancer in Meru is quite high, and we want to be part of the solution,” he said.
Last year, Michael Selelo emerged victorious in the men’s 14km race after clocking 48:43, ahead of Shadrak Korir, who timed 48:52 and third-placed Josphat Tuwei, who clocked 49:01.
In the women’s elite race, Gladys Songol claimed the title in 56:56, holding off Regina Wambui to second in 57:46. Jedidah Chepkemoi completed the podium in 57:52.
