Two men died after a mining shaft collapsed while they were reportedly repairing it in the Kwa Milka area of Kuria West, Migori county.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2026, at a mining site, police said.
According to police, the two men were inside the shaft installing structural supports when the mine collapsed, burying them under soil and stone debris.
The bodies were later taken to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital by people who reported that the two men had been involved in an accident while repairing the mining shaft.
Police officers visited the hospital and found the two bodies.
One of the deceased was identified by relatives as Chris Menganyi, a 25-year-old man from the Kuria community.
The identity of the second victim was yet to be established.
Police said the owner of the mining shaft had not been reached and was being sought to assist with investigations.
The scene was processed by investigators, while both bodies were preserved at Kehancha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Such tragedies have been common and on the rise at mining sites amid calls for action to address the trend.
Officials have been pushing for reforms in the mining sector to address the menace.
Elsewhere, a 44-year-old man drowned in Rianyamisa Stream in Kitutu Central, Kisii county, on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Samuel Ongoro, whose body was found in the water at Bochura Village, Mwamuzioma Sub-location, on Saturday morning.
Witnesses told police Ongoro was last seen at about 7.20 pm on Friday while allegedly drunk and heading out to collect a milk debt.
Police officers visited the scene, located about three kilometres east of the police station.
They established that Ongoro had drowned in the stream and found his body lying in the water.
The scene was processed before the body was retrieved and moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
The body is being preserved pending a postmortem examination as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning continue.
Elsewhere, an eight-year-old boy drowned while swimming with other children at Mwaepe Beach in Msambweni, Kwale county.
The deceased was a Grade Three pupil at Malalani Primary School.
According to police, the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, while the boy was swimming with others at the beach.
Efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful, and he succumbed to the drowning.
Police officers from Diani Police Station, accompanied by Scenes of Crime personnel, visited the beach and documented the scene.
The boy’s body was subsequently moved to the Kwale Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.
