Kenyans on X are locked in a heated debate over CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo. The controversy follows his attendance at a traditional engagement ceremony on Saturday. The event took place in Kilgoris, Narok County.
It was the koito ceremony for Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto, and her fiancé, Isaya Yunge. Madowo’s presence at the private event has sparked a wave of "cancel culture" among some Kenyan youths.
The Betrayal Narrative
Since the 2024 Finance Bill protests, many young Kenyans have viewed Madowo as a defender of their cause. His coverage of the Gen Z-led demonstrations earned him significant respect. However, his appearance at the President’s daughter’s ceremony has left some feeling let down.
One user, Thirsty Kipsoiwet, expressed deep disappointment on social media. "I will never trust Larry Madowo again in my life! I feel used and betrayed," he wrote.
Others linked his attendance to the political climate. A user under the handle #JusticeforRex stated, "We are all shocked to see you here @LarryMadowo. You have lost all credibility among those that this repressed regime has killed and continues to harm."
While some critics see the visit as a political endorsement, others argue it was purely personal. Reports indicate that Madowo shares a close bond with the groom, Isaya Yunge.
"Charlene Ruto’s husband, Isaya Yunge and Larry Madowo are good friends. Now you know why Larry Madowo was in Kilgoris," explained Alinur Mohamed.
This sentiment was echoed by others who feel the public is overreacting. Cleopha Muriuki noted, "The guy marrying Charlene is his friend. Banange." Another user, Kwame, mocked the outrage, saying, "So Larry Madowo attending Charlene’s Koito is now a political endorsement? This cancel culture is getting unserious by the day."
Madowo Fires Back
Larry Madowo did not remain silent as hashtags calling for his cancellation began to trend. He took to X to post the very phrase his critics were using.
"Cancel Larry Madowo," he posted simply. The post quickly went viral.
He also shared a celebratory message for the couple. "Harusi tunayooo! Hongera sana. Proud of my little brother Isayafor getting his brideCharlene. Welcome to the family," he wrote.
The debate revealed a sharp divide in the digital public square. Some users warned against losing Madowo as a media ally. Manu001 remarked, "This can only be done at our own risks. Hapa tukikupoteza, we are cooked during maandamano coverage."
Others believe personal lives should remain separate from professional duties. Jungle argued, "Having a chitchat with the president is no reason to cancel you. I would also if I met him, we need to understand our disagreements are policy based and not personal beefs."
