A mystery surrounds the death of a 38-year-old woman who was found dead in a lodging room in Eldoret's Jua Kali area, just hours after checking in to spend the night.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani said the woman had booked a room at about 5pm on Monday, telling attendants she wanted to rest.
She arrived alone and, according to staff, appeared to be in good health.
The alarm was raised on Tuesday morning after attendants repeatedly knocked on her door but received no response.
The caretaker then pushed the door, which was apparently unlocked, and found the woman lying motionless on the bed.
Sicharani said the deceased was found half-naked but had no visible physical injuries, leaving investigators to piece together the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police officers visited the scene and launched investigations, with detectives expected to question lodging employees and guests who occupied neighbouring rooms to establish whether they heard or saw anything unusual during the night.
The police commander said the lodging does not have CCTV cameras, a factor that could complicate investigations.
Officers recovered the woman's national identity card and are using it to establish further details about her.
Her body was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death as investigations continue.
