Vanice Kerubo during a previous race/ HANDOUT In the men's race walk, Kenya has never won a Commonwealth Games gold medal, with the nation's closest brush with the title coming at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, where Samuel Gathimba claimed bronze in 1:19:51.
Australia's Dane Bird-Smith captured gold in that race in 1:19:34, as England's Tom Bosworth settled for silver after clocking 1:19:38. However, with veteran Gathimba absent from this year's Games, the weight of the nation's hopes rests squarely on the shoulders of the youthful Ndangiri.
The men's 10,000m race walk is scheduled for 9.05 pm at Scotstoun Stadium. Ndangiri booked his place in Glasgow with a commanding display at the national trials held at Nyayo Stadium on June 19, where he powered clear of the field to stop the clock at 39:14.0.
He crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of veteran Samuel Gathimba (39:45.4) and Hersitone Wanyonyi (40:59.7).
Ndangiri said qualifying for the Games is the culmination of a dream he has relentlessly pursued over the past four years.
"This is my first time qualifying for the Commonwealth Games. It has been a lifelong dream since 2022 when I was starting my journey in athletics," he said. "It has been a long four years of working to make sure I make the team."
The 20-year-old is confident that if everything falls into place on race day, he has what it takes to march onto the podium.
"If my body responds well at the competition, I am coming back with a medal."
Ndangiri also draws confidence from an impressive 2026 campaign. He began the season on a disappointing note, finishing 42nd in the marathon race walk at the World Race Walking Team Championships in Brasília, Brazil, after clocking 3:36:04.
However, that setback only fuelled his resurgence as he bounced back to claim his maiden senior continental medal, taking silver in the 20km race walk at the African Championships in Accra, Ghana, in 1:20:01 behind Ethiopia's Misgana Wakuma (1:18:47).
He further underlined his growing credentials by storming to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 10,000m race walk title in 38:54.4.
Meanwhile, US-based Kerubo has already rewritten the record books after becoming the first Kenyan woman to qualify for a Commonwealth Games 400m hurdles final.
Kerubo sealed her place in the medal race after finishing third in her heat in 56.43, behind Jamaica's Shiann Salmon (55.30) and Britain's Emily Newnham (56.08).
Having already broken new ground for Kenya in the event, Kerubo heads into the final full of belief, but faces a formidable cast led by Birmingham 2022 silver medallist Shiann Salmon.
Also lining up are 2025 European Under-23 champion Emily Newnham and 2017 World Under-20 silver medallist Sanique Walker of Jamaica.
Adding further quality to the field are Australia's Sarah Carli and the Canadian duo of Brooke Overholt and Savannah Sutherland.
The women's 400m hurdles final is scheduled for 10.52 pm.
