The UN Security Council will today begin informal, closed-door ballots to gauge support for seven candidates seeking to become the next UN Secretary-General. The contenders—from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, Senegal and Uganda—aim to succeed Portugal’s António Guterres, who steps down later this year after two five-year terms. The secret ballots are conducted exclusively by Council members as part of the selection process.
