Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has raised alarm over raw sugar imports, warning they could harm local farmers despite rising domestic output. He told the Senate Kenya produced over 348,000 tonnes between January and May, yet Mombasa Sugar Refinery Limited imported 165,000 tonnes. Cherargei urged tighter regulation, cautioning that unchecked imports risk undermining efforts to revive the sugar sector and sustain local farmers’ livelihoods.
