UoN main campusThe University of Nairobi has released admission letters for students admitted to the 2026-27 academic year, with the institution asking new students to prepare for enrolment from August 24, 2026.
The university said it had processed the letters and sent SMS messages containing registration numbers to admitted students.
“The University of Nairobi has processed admission letters for students admitted in the 2026/27 academic year. SMS sent to all students with registration numbers,” the notice read.
The admission letters and joining instructions are available through the University’s Student Management Information System (SMIS) portal.
The release comes after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) announced the 2026 placement results, paving the way for students from the 2025 KCSE cohort to join universities and other institutions of higher learning.
How to access your UoN admission letter
- Visit the University of Nairobi Student Management Information System (SMIS) portal at smis.uonbi.ac.ke.
- Use your registration number, for example C3/3333/2026, as the username.
- Use your KCSE index number as the password.
- Log in and download your admission letter and joining instructions.
- Complete the required forms and upload the requested documents through the portal, including medical forms where required.
Students seeking government financial support should apply for the relevant scholarship and HELB loan through *642# before the August 31, 2026 deadline.
Students report challenges accessing letters
Following the announcement, some students said they were unable to access their admission letters as directed.
“We are still unable to access the admission letter,” one student said.
Another asked how students who had not received the SMS or an email could obtain their registration numbers.
“How do I get my registration number since I haven't received any email or SMS on the same?” the student asked.
Other queries focused on the online registration process, including whether medical sections had to be completed online.
“Should we complete it through online even the doctor's part?” another student asked.
There was also confusion over whether a registration number and admission number refer to the same identifier.
“Is the registration number and admission number are they the same?” another student asked.
The university's online information indicates that newly admitted students can obtain an allocated registration number through the SMIS portal using the application reference number appearing on their letter of offer.
UoN's current portal information also lists the National ID/passport number, KCSE index number or application reference number as possible initial-password options in some SMIS workflows.
Students should therefore follow the credentials specified for their admission category or the instructions accompanying their admission.
