Homicide detectives have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturer Edgar Mokua, whose body was discovered days after he went missing from his Lavington home.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was arrested at an estate in Ruiru following forensic investigations that linked him to the killing.
Mokua was last seen on July 6, 2026, when he left his residence at Princes Park in Lavington at about 4.20 pm and failed to return home.
His family later reported him missing at Muthangari Police Station after efforts to trace him proved unsuccessful.
Five days later, his body was found at the Nairobi City mortuary, where it had been taken by officers from Kiamumbi Police Station after being recovered near Woodcreek Academy.
The DCI said the circumstances surrounding the death prompted homicide detectives to take over the investigation.
"The case's complexity prompted a swift takeover by homicide detectives, and preliminary investigations revealed a series of events leading to Mokua's demise," the agency said.
Investigators established that on the night he disappeared, Mokua spent several hours at a popular club in Lavington with two men and a woman before the group later moved to another club within a mall in the same area.
According to detectives, his companions left the club, leaving him behind, and he was never seen alive again.
His body was later found dumped near Woodcreek Academy.
Investigators relied on forensic evidence to trace a grey Toyota vehicle, which they believe was used to transport and dump the lecturer's body before speeding away from the scene.
"Thanks to forensic intelligence, investigators established that a grey Toyota Ractis... was the vehicle responsible for dropping Mokua's body at the scene before speeding away," the DCI said.
The breakthrough led detectives to the suspect, who was arrested during an operation in Ruiru. Police also recovered the suspected vehicle at a farm in Juja.
"Through forensic trails, detectives managed to arrest the suspect... and recovered the motor vehicle," the DCI added.
The suspect is now in police custody pending arraignment as investigators continue to pursue other leads to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
Police have also detained the recovered vehicle as an exhibit.
The DCI appealed to members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to report through its toll-free hotline or WhatsApp reporting platform, assuring them of confidentiality.
