Police in Marsabit county have launched investigations after armed assailants shot one man dead and seriously injured another before fleeing with a gold detector machine in Moyale subcounty.
The deceased was identified as Dayow Abdullahi, 21, while the injured survivor aged 19, is receiving treatment at Moyale Sub-County Hospital.
According to police, the two were travelling on a motorcycle towards Hillo in Tanzania on Monday morning when they were ambushed by gunmen at Tessum Qalicha in Dabel location.
Investigators said Abdullahi was riding as a pillion and was carrying a gold detector machine when the attackers opened fire. He was shot in the left side of the chest, with the bullet exiting through the right side, and died at the scene.
The rider, sustained a gunshot wound to the upper left abdomen, with the bullet exiting through the right side of his body. He was rushed to Moyale Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Police said the attackers fled with the gold detector machine after the shooting.
Police officers who processed the scene recovered five spent 5.56×45mm cartridge cases, which have been retained as exhibits for forensic examination.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Moyale Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations to establish the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the robbery and fatal shooting.
Preliminary findings suggest the assailants targeted the victims to steal the gold detector machine.

And a 52-year-old mason was killed after a church wall collapsed during a construction project in Ikutha subcounty, Kitui county.
The deceased, Onesmus Mutua, was working on the roof of a new building for the God Voice of His People Church when the tragedy occurred on Monday evening.
According to police, the wall of the church under construction suddenly gave way, causing the mason to fall from the roof before he was struck by falling stones and debris. He died on the scene.
Two other construction workers, identified as Benard Kisangau and Charles Kiratia, sustained minor injuries in the collapse.
Police officers who visited the scene found the deceased with multiple injuries consistent with being hit by falling debris after the wall collapsed.
The injured workers were taken to Mutomo Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
