In July 2018, Kenyan comedian MC Jessytrended across social media for his choice of attire during a trip to Scotland. Photos of the comedian wearing a traditional Scottish kilt—often teased as a "skirt" by fans back home—went viral.
Now, in a reflective post, the former Churchill Raw host has shared the humorous and harrowing story of what really happened behind the scenes.
Seeking the Royal Experience
MC Jessy, whose real name is Jasper Muthomi, was in Scotland for a comedy show. He decided he wanted to fully immerse himself in the local traditions. A Scottish friend acted as his guide, promising him an authentic cultural encounter.
His friend suggested that a "Prince" must wear a kilt.
“If you want the REAL Scottish experience, you must wear the traditional attire called a Kilt. It’s royal attire, worn with great pride,” the friend told him.
Going Full Tradition
The "royal" experience came with a specific, traditional requirement. His guide insisted that to truly honour the culture, one must wear nothing underneath the kilt. The friend even claimed that members of the British Royal Family, including Prince William and Prince Harry, followed this custom.
“Nikaskia ni royal attire, nikasema, ‘Bring it on, mate!’” he recalled.
Determined to respect the heritage, Jessy complied. “As the only Prince of Amerushire, nikasema culture lazima iheshimiwe. Nikatoa kila kitu nikabaki ‘Nũii’ huko ndani!” he shared.
The Minus Five Degree Emergency
By 7 pm, the Scottish summer proved to be unforgiving. The temperature plummeted unexpectedly.
“This thing dropped to minus five degrees (-5°C)!” Jessy recalled. The comedian, used to the Kenyan climate, was unprepared for the extreme cold.
The freezing temperatures led to what he described as a "survival tactic" by his own body. He realised with horror that the cold had caused a physical retraction.
“My fellow Kenyans… MACHINE ILIKUA IMEPOTEA!”
Panic set in. Jessy rushed to a public toilet to confirm his fears and let out a loud scream. The sound was so alarming that nearby locals rushed to his aid, fearing the "Black Prince" was in danger.
A Four-Hour Recovery
When help arrived, they found the comedian in distress, clutching his kilt. The remedy was as unusual as the situation itself. He revealed that hot water had to be used to help his body recover from the shock of the cold.
The entire ordeal lasted for a significant amount of time. “For four hours! IMAGINE… 4 hours...!!!!” he wrote. He eventually made it back to his hotel for a hot shower to fully recover.
