Kenyan rapper King Kaka has opened up about the inspiration behind his latest album, The Year of the Pen, saying the project represents a different level of songwriting and personal growth.
Speaking during an interview on Kiss FM with the host Cdy Wambui and Jeremy Wahome, the award-winning artiste explained that the album’s title carries several meanings, beginning with the way he approached writing the songs.
“It’s like a triple tundra, the title of the album. So one, there is writing that I have in the album. It’s different from the other albums.”
King Kaka said the project was born from a deep sense of purpose, explaining that he believes God guided him throughout the creative process.
“I was just telling my daughter, like God nikama amenipatia pen. Ameniambia, ‘We andika.’ I don’t want you to write. I’m writing on your behalf, but I want you to facilitate. You will facilitate the writing.”
He said this message is reflected in the album artwork.

“That’s why the cover, ukiona there’s a hand imetoka kwa sky with a pen.”
Mr Invisible
Beyond music, King Kaka revealed that he is also a visual artist and paints under the name Mr Invisible.
He shared that the artwork on the album cover was a collaboration between him and his daughter.
“My daughter did the sketching, na mimi nikafanya the actual painting.”

The rapper added that painting has become another important part of his artistic journey.
“Yeah, I do paint. Na December niko na exhibition, like 15 paintings.”
According to King Kaka,Mr Invisible is the name he uses whenever he exhibits his work as a painter, separating that identity from his music career.
A year dedicated to writing
King Kaka also explained that The Year of the Pen was not created overnight.
Instead, he spent an entire year developing the project, with his main focus being to improve his songwriting.
“I built the album over a one-year period. So, it was just me focusing on my writing skills.”
He said musicians should constantly challenge themselves creatively instead of relying only on what they already know.
“As much as we are musicians and entitled to what we know, there are also levels you can push yourself. Hiyo album inashow I pushed myself and what you can get when you push yourself.”
The power of consistency
The rapper went on to explain that the album title has another layer of meaning centred on discipline and remaining focused on a single goal.
“The third meaning now is the power of consistency and just focusing on one thing.”
King Kaka credited his children for teaching him the importance of staying committed to his craft.
“My kids have taught me to lock in.”
