Popular Kenyan radio presenter Mwalimu Rachel has ignited a fresh conversation online. The Kiss 100 FM host took to social media to question a growing societal trend.
She expressed curiosity over why many women would rather join a polygamous marriage setting than choose to live single.
In a video shared with her followers, the media personality appeared puzzled by the apparent dread of singleness. She noted that people often look for any option just to ensure they are in a relationship.
Is Being Single Really That Bad?
Mwalimu Rachel questioned the negative stigma attached to unmarried women. She wondered why the prospect of being single causes so much worry.
The presenter clarified that she was not criticizing those in relationships. She noted that traditional unions are perfectly fine. However, she expressed concern over the desperate search to avoid being alone.
"And I'm not trying to bash those that are in marriages or relationships. It's great. Lakini mbona huwa inaonekana ah Hapana, heri hata uolewe katika polygamous marriage, but mwanamke asikuwe peke yake?” she questioned further.
The Biblical Perspective on Singleness
To support her point, the radio host drew comparisons from religious texts. She reminded her audience that Christian scriptures do not view singleness as a failure.
Mwalimu Rachel referenced the teachings of Apostle Paul. She noted that biblical guidance explicitly states that living without a partner is acceptable.
"Hata biblia ilisema it is okay. Kama huwezani unaweza kaa bila na utakuwa tu sawa. Apostle Paul said something I think to that effect. Mbona huwa tunasahau hiyo?"
Polygamy in Popular Culture
The presenter laughed at how strongly society pushes back against independent adulthood for women. She noted that some people advise women to join multi-wife households simply to secure a husband.
She linked the theme to popular African television dramas that showcase large, multi-wife households. She mentioned characters like Chief Donatus from the show My Flatmates to illustrate her point.
"How bad is it that everyone is just against aging in your singleness and not being married? Yani mpaka unaambiwa okay kama huwezi pata mtu wako basi uolewe kwa familia ambayo kuna mabibi wengine hapo. Like in Baba Segi's life and Bolanle, being the fourth wife. Hangeweza kaa tu peke yake? Sielewi."
A Question for the Audience
Concluding her thoughts, the broadcaster posed a direct question to both men and women. She asked her followers to share their genuine feelings on the matter. She wanted to know if they would ever consider a polygamous lifestyle.
"So would you consider polygamy as a man having many wives, or as a woman being married into polygamy? Let me know."
