The Kenyan music community is reeling from the sudden loss of Ohangla star Tony Ndiema. The popular artist passed away on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. He was receiving treatment at Oasis Hospital in Kisii town.
Reports suggest his condition worsened before his death, and he had lost his ability to speak.
The Man Behind the Music: Anton Okoth Ochieng Miuga
Tony Ndiema, whose real name was Anton Okoth Ochieng Miuga, had a life story rooted in the capital. According to a Facebook Page, Basil Jambason Otieno, Ndiema was born and raised in the Kariobangi area of Nairobi.
Ndiema completed his education up to the Form Four level before discovering his musical talent. He eventually entered the studio to record his first song, titled"Ajema Nyar Asembo Republic."
He became a leader of the BBR Band. His style was a unique blend of traditional Luo sounds and modern Rhumba. This "Ohangla-Rhumba Fusion" made him a standout artist in the newer wave of the genre.
"Tony Ndiema was one of the youngest artists, killing the airwaves with his sweet, soft, and enchanting voice with tunes to listen to,” the page described him.
Prince Indah Mourns Him
The news of Ndiema's death hit fellow Ohangla star Prince Indah hard. Indah described him as a pillar of the industry. He noted that death cannot erase the footprints Ndiema left in performing halls.

Jalang’o Bids a Final Farewell
Lang'ata MP and media personality Phelix Odiwuor, known as Jalang'o, joined the country in mourning. He shared a brief but emotional tribute to the musician. He encouraged his late friend to keep the music alive in the next life.

Sandra Dacha Laments a ‘Dark Day’
Actress and comedienne Sandra Dacha expressed profound sadness over the loss. She highlighted how Ndiema’s music brought joy and united people. She referred to him affectionately as "jangoma."
Singer Suzanna Owiyo also shared her sorrow regarding the untimely passing. She described Ndiema as a sensational artist whose talent would live on. She offered her prayers to his family and the entire music community.
"His incredible talent will never be forgotten,” Suzanna Owiyo mourned.
