Security agencies have intensified preparations along sections of the Thika Superhighway ahead of anticipated demonstrations marking the anniversary of the Gen Z-led protests.

Photographs taken along the busy highway show large stones and tree branches placed across parts of the road, while uniformed security officers monitor traffic movements at various points.

The measures come as authorities continue to insist that June 25 will remain a normal working day despite calls by some groups to commemorate the events of June 2024.

Heavy security deployment visible

The images show officers stationed at strategic locations along the highway as motorists navigate through the affected sections.

In one location, stones appear to have been arranged across multiple lanes, forcing vehicles to slow down. Other photographs show officers standing guard near temporary obstructions created using rocks and tree branches.

Traffic continued to flow in the affected areas, although motorists were seen approaching the roadblocks cautiously.

The increased deployment reflects a broader security operation announced by police ahead of the planned anniversary activities.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat previously said security agencies had put adequate measures in place to protect lives and property while ensuring law and order is maintained.

“Kenyans will continue with their day-to-day activities. We will provide security to all Kenyans,” Lagat said.

Authorities urge peaceful conduct.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has also stated that security agencies are on alert and have been instructed to protect peaceful citizens while taking action against individuals involved in criminal activities.

Meanwhile, Nairobi police commanders have indicated that security teams have been placed on high alert across the capital and surrounding areas.

The anniversary carries significant national attention because it commemorates the demonstrations that culminated in the storming of Parliament on June 25, 2024.Rights groups reported that more than 60 people lost their lives during the protests.

Transport operators assure commuters.

Despite concerns over possible disruptions, the Matatu Owners Association has said public transport services will continue operating normally across the country.

The association has encouraged commuters to proceed with their daily routines while observing safety guidelines.

As the anniversary approaches, security remains visibly heightened along major routes, with authorities maintaining that normal economic and public activities should continue while citizens exercise their rights peacefully.
