Former Nation Media Group journalist Kitavi Mutua has died after being bitten by a red spitting cobra at his home in Kitui South, Kitui County.
Mutua died on Friday, October 30, 2026, while receiving treatment at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Snake Attack and Medical Response
The journalist was reportedly attacked by the venomous snake at his home before being rushed to hospital for treatment. His condition later worsened, leading to serious complications that affected several of his body organs. Family spokesperson Faith Kithele confirmed that doctors made several attempts to save his life but were unsuccessful.
“Medics tried three times to resuscitate him after he suffered a cardiac arrest,” Kithele said.

Health Complications in ICU
His family also revealed that he had diabetes, which made his health situation more complicated following the snake bite. He spent about two weeks in the ICU, where his kidneys, liver and lungs reportedly failed.
Honouring His Journalism Legacy
His death has left many people in the media industry and the people of Kitui mourning a journalist who spent many years telling stories from the region.
Mutua was known for covering politics, health, climate change, devolution and community issues. His work helped bring stories from Kitui and the wider Ukambani region. He left the Daily Nation newsroom about two years ago to focus on private business but remained respected by his former colleagues.
Leaders Pay Tribute
Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu was among the leaders who mourned him. She remembered how Mutua supported her when she was starting her political journey by teaching her about communication in politics and media.
Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu also mourned him, describing him as a distinguished journalist who had built strong relationships with people.
