In a surprising turn of events following the high-stakes Vurugu 2 boxing match, event organiser Oga Obinna has announced a personal cash gift for bodybuilder Gachau Njoroge.
Despite Gachau’s sixth-round knockout loss to Phil Castro on Saturday night, Obinna is rewarding him with a Sh50,000 bonus for his contributions to the event.
The fight, held at the Sarit Centre, ended with Gachau being rushed to the hospital after a brutal series of punches. However, his performance and his efforts leading up to the bout did not go unnoticed by the promoters.
The Reward for Marketing Excellence
Speaking on the Obinna Show, the host explained that the bonus was a recognition of Gachau’s role in making the event a commercial success. While the winner's prize went to Phil Castro, Obinna felt Gachau deserved financial compensation for his tireless promotion.
According to Obinna, Gachau outdid everybody else when it came to marketing the fight. He posted videos nearly every day and collaborated with various content creators to build hype. This effort was a key factor in the event's massive digital turnout.
“The reason I’m rewarding you is that in Vurugu 2, you marketed it well. You were the Mbavu Destroyer of Vurugu 2. You outdid everyone in marketing it.”
A Record-Breaking Night on YouTube
The decision to grant the bonus comes as Vurugu 2 recorded unprecedented viewership numbers for a local sporting event. Obinna revealed that the live stream reached a peak of between 70,000 and 80,000 concurrent viewers on YouTube.
The intense interest was fueled by the Majembe rivalry and Gachau's consistent social media presence. Even when technical issues briefly hit the private streaming servers, the transition to YouTube proved that the public was desperate to see the "Robot" in action.
The Toll of the Sixth Round
The bonus also serves as a gesture of support following Gachau’s medical emergency. After the Round 6 knockout, he was taken to Avenue Hospital. Medical tests revealed that his oxygen saturation was dangerously low, a condition known as hypoxia.
Gachau admitted that he had lost awareness of the fight as early as the fourth round. He described his brain switching off to save itself due to the physical strain and a high heart rate.
Future Plans: Back to Bodybuilding
Despite the bonus and the success of the event, Gachau has decided to retire from boxing. He confirmed that he will return to his roots in bodybuilding, with his next competition scheduled for October.
He noted that his family, particularly his wife, was deeply worried by the events of Saturday night.
