Kenyan content creator Murugi Munyi has said she would continue using her husband’s surname even if her marriage were to end.

Speaking in a video later shared on her Instagram Stories, Murugi explained that changing her name again would be impractical because many of her official documents and professional identity already carry the name Munyi.

She said that if she were ever to remarry, a future partner would have to understand her decision to keep the surname.

“If something were to happen, would I go back to being Murugi Obwaka? Eh, how? All my government documents, my ID, my everything, are Munyi.”

Murugi added that she sees the name as part of her public identity and personal brand.

“I think I’ll just remain Munyi. If I were to get another husband, he’ll just have to understand. I can’t go to Murugi Obwaka. I’ll just have to remain Murugi Munyi because that’s just my brand.”

Online reactions

Her comments generated mixed reactions online.

Some social media users supported her decision, saying many people choose to keep a surname after marriage because it becomes part of their identity, career, and official records.

A conversation about making decisions in the present

Murugi also spoke about making life choices based on present realities rather than uncertain future possibilities. She said people often make decisions based on events that may never happen.

According to her, individuals should embrace the freedom to make decisions that suit their circumstances at a particular time.

“We are often making decisions based on a future you’re not even assured of. You only know and have right now.”

She also noted that changing one’s mind later in life should not be viewed negatively.

“If I ever change my mind and I decide to change, I can also change at that point. That’s the beauty of life. You can do whatever you want if you have the agency of choice.

Murugi concluded by expressing hope that she would keep the surname for the rest of her life.
“Life is short, and life is also long. Let’s wait and see how things go, but my hope is to remain Munyi until I die. That is my belief, and that is my hope.”
