Majembe, the reigning champion of the inaugural Vurugu 1.0 boxing match, has finally set the record straight regarding his winnings.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on the 2mbili TV YouTube channel, the boxer addressed viral rumours that he walked away with over Ksh 3.5 million after defeating Mbavu Destroyer at Kasarani Arena in April.
The fighter dismissed the multi-million-shilling claims as mere hype. He clarified that while the public perception was of a massive windfall, the reality on the ground was different.
The Real Numbers
According to Majembe, the total amount he took home was Ksh 1.8 million. This figure includes the Ksh 1.7 million prize for his victory and an additional Ksh 100,000 provided by the promoter for "survival" during the training period.
"Those were just stories, but in reality, it didn't reach that amount. People will say anything online, but what you actually get is different—pale mimi niliokota kitu kama 1.7 million hapo. So, let’s assume hizo zingine ni kama nililipa tax. Hiyo 1.7m nilipewa cash,” Majembe said.
Despite the figure being lower than rumoured, Majembe expressed deep satisfaction with the reward. He noted that no other boxer in Kenya has earned such a significant amount, along with a car and a high-end phone, from a single match. He described the deal as a "win-win" situation for both him and the organisers.
“But mimi sifeel like kuna mtu alininyanyasa, niliona ni kama win-win situation juu Kenya hakuna mtu amewahi cheza game akapata doh kama hiyo na gari na iPhone 17 pro max,” he added.
Life After the Win
The champion has been busy putting his earnings to good use. He confirmed that he has moved out of the ghetto and into a more comfortable residence. His primary focus was his family, particularly his mother.
"What I am proud of is that I bought land. It was always my plan to get my mother out of the ghetto and boost her business."
Contrary to local gossip, Majembe still owns the car he won in April. He plans to register it with a travel Sacco to ensure it generates a steady monthly income rather than just being a personal expense.
The Vurugu 2.0 Withdrawal
The biggest shock for fans was the announcement that Majembe will not participate in Vurugu 2.0. He was originally scheduled to face a Somali boxer in a highly anticipated international bout.
The withdrawal stems from a breakdown in contract negotiations with the promoter. Majembe revealed that a major conflict arose regarding his personal sponsors.
Blocked and Out of Time
The disagreement reached a point where the promoter reportedly blocked Majembe on communication platforms. With the event only days away, the boxer has stopped training and admits he is no longer match-fit.

While he sits out Vurugu 2.0, Majembe remains confident in his skills. He teased a potential return in December, perhaps for a rematch with Mbavu Destroyer or a fresh clash with the Somali Boxer.
