In a significant moment for the East African music scene, Bongo Flava veteran Alikiba visited Konde Village, the home of fellow artist Harmonize. The visit marked the first time the singer, often referred to as "King Kiba," had set foot in the residence.
The two stars met to discuss their latest musical collaboration, titled "Utanionea." Speaking with entertainment journalists at the site, Alikiba addressed the current hierarchy in the industry and his working relationship with the Konde Music Worldwide founder.
The "Number One" Endorsement
During the interview, the discussion turned to Harmonize's status in the music industry. When asked about Harmonize referring to himself as "number one" in their new track, Alikiba was clear in his support.
"Konde Boy is number one," Alikiba told reporters. When pressed on why he felt this way, he responded simply: "Why not? He must be number one, he deserves that,” Alikiba insisted.
When journalists asked Alikiba where he ranks himself in comparison, he declined to give himself a specific position.
"I will never say that I’m the king, People have given me that title and I have no number," he stated, suggesting that his legacy exists outside of standard rankings.
A Foundation of Mutual Respect
Alikiba emphasised that his decision to visit Harmonize and collaborate was rooted in mutual respect. He noted that respect is a "free" and essential part of human interaction.
"Harmonize is a young man who has respect, that’s why I have also respected him and stepped here at his residence for the very first time in my life," Alikiba explained.
He added that he chooses to honour those who show him the same courtesy. He also mentioned that the timing was perfect for the visit because they were releasing their new project together.
The Artistry of "Utanionea"
The collaboration features Harmonize on the first verse and Alikiba on the second. Alikiba dismissed any idea that the order of verses indicates a level of importance.
He compared the structure of a song to building a house. "Music is like a house," he said. "The first verse is a good opening... and I stayed in the final verse to continue and finish the music."
Alikiba has been a dominant force in Bongo Flava for nearly two decades, known for hits like "Cinderella" and "Aje." Harmonize, who rose to fame under the WCB Wasafi label before launching his own empire, Konde Music Worldwide, in 2019, represents the new generation of Tanzanian superstars.
Alikiba noted that despite his long career, he still values new ideas. "I have been in this game for a long time," he said. "When I get a new idea, even from you, I will respect it because I want to deliver something new."
The veteran singer explained that while he listens to advice, he uses his experience to polish every song before it reaches the fans.
