Lilian Odira celebrates with her women's 800m medal at the Tokyo World Championships/ FILEKenya is set to unleash a formidable middle-distance arsenal at the Rabat Diamond League on Sunday, spearheaded by world 1,500m bronze medallist Reynold Cheruiyot, world 800m champion Lilian Odira and world steeplechase bronze medallist Edmund Serem.
Cheruiyot will spearhead Kenya’s challenge in the men's 1,500m, lining up for his second Diamond League outing of the season.
The 21-year-old launched his Diamond League campaign in Shanghai, stepping up to the 3,000m, where he clocked 7:26.11 to finish second behind Belgium’s Mohamed Abdilaahi, who won in 7:25.77.
The Kenyan youngster will be seeking redemption in Rabat after narrowly missing victory at last year’s edition, where he settled for second in the 1,500m after stopping the clock at 3:31.78.
That race saw Kenyan-born American Jonah Koech storm to victory in 3:31.43, with Festus Lagat completing the podium in 3:32.06. Cheruiyot has shown encouraging form since opening his 2026 campaign.
He kicked off his season on the cross-country circuit, winning the 2km loop race at the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour on February 14, slicing through the tape in 5:52. Daniel Munguti followed closely in second after clocking 5:53, while Timothy Cheruiyot rounded off the podium in 5:54.
Cheruiyot then switched indoors, featuring in the 1,500m at the Meeting Hauts-de-France on February 19, where he placed ninth in 3:42.27.
He opened his outdoor track campaign at the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, producing a strong second-place finish in 3:34.73 behind Olympic and world 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who won in 3:34.11.
In Rabat, Cheruiyot will be joined by Festus Lagat, who will be chasing improved fortunes after finishing eighth over 800m at the LA Track Festival on May 23 in 1:45.98. The Kenyan duo face a stern examination from Portugal’s world 1,500m champion Isaac Nader and France’s Azeddine Habz.
In the men’s steeplechase, world bronze medallist Edmund Serem leads Kenya’s charge as he looks to launch his Diamond League campaign on a stronger note. Serem opened his 2026 season with a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Kip Keino Classic, clocking 8:25.85.
Ethiopia’s Gemechu Godana claimed top honours in 8:14.55, while Simon Koech (8:15.71) and Leonard Bett (8:25.06) settled for second and third, respectively.
Serem will team up with Koech and Abraham Serem in Rabat as Kenya fields a three-pronged assault in the barriers contest.
The trio, however, face a towering challenge from Moroccan home favourite and two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali.
Also lurking in a stacked field are New Zealand’s world champion Geordie Beamish and Belgium’s 2025 Diamond League Finals champion Frederik Ruppert.
In the women’s 800m, world champion Lilian Odira will be the woman under the spotlight. Odira will be making only her second career Diamond League appearance after debuting on the circuit last year in Silesia.
At the 2025 Silesia meeting, the Kenyan clocked 1:56.52 to finish behind Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson, who controlled the race for victory in 1:54.74. Botswana’s Oratile Nowe completed the podium after posting 1:56.76.
In Rabat, Odira faces another stern examination against Swiss sensation Audrey Werro, the 2026 world indoor 800m silver medallist, as well as American Addison Wiley.
