Nairobi’s air is filled with anticipation after legendary saxophonist Kirk Whalum officially arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) ahead of the highly anticipated “One Night Only” concert set for this Sunday at the Sarit Expo Centre.
The Grammy-winning musician, whose career spans jazz, gospel and R&B, received a warm Kenyan welcome upon arrival as excitement continued building around what organisers are positioning as a high-end, black-tie, Las Vegas-level production experience during the Madaraka Day long weekend.
The concert will mark the first time four internationally recognised acts share one stage for the exclusive showcase.
Organisers have also maintained a strict no gate tickets policy, reinforcing the event’s limited-capacity and one-night-only positioning.

Kirk Whalum’s Deep Connection to Kenya
For Whalum, the trip to Kenya represents far more than another international performance.
During his arrival interview, the celebrated saxophonist spoke warmly about his connection to the country, even jokingly asking whether there was room for him to be adopted into a Kenyan family.
Beyond the humour, Whalum revealed his long-standing relationship with Kenya’s classical music education initiative, Ghetto Classics, which was introduced to him by the late Bob Collymore.
The musician explained that he has been mentoring young students from Korogocho through Zoom sessions and is excited to finally reconnect with them physically during his visit.
“I’ve been teaching students there over Zoom, and so now I get to come back and see them,” he shared.
The emotional connection adds another layer to Whalum’s Nairobi performance, especially for local fans who view him not just as a global music icon but also as someone invested in nurturing young Kenyan talent.
First Time Sharing a Stage With Karyn White
One of the biggest highlights of the concert will be Whalum’s appearance alongside legendary R&B singer Karyn White.
Although the two artistes have known each other for years, Whalum confirmed this will be the first time they officially perform together on stage.
The saxophonist described the upcoming concert as a gathering of “superstars” and hinted at special collaborative moments throughout the evening.
“I’ll have my phone, I’ll make videos the whole time, and I’ll also play a saxophone,” he joked while discussing the show.
White, best known for hits such as Superwoman and Romantic, recently arrived in Kenya ahead of the performance and expressed excitement about finally performing for Kenyan fans for the first time.
Madaraka Weekend Concert Experience
The “One Night Only” concert takes place during the Madaraka Day long weekend, positioning it as one of Nairobi’s biggest entertainment events of the season.
Organisers are banking on the success of the sold-out 2025 Kenny G concert, which reportedly recorded 93.75 per cent excellent or good audience feedback, while 81 per cent of attendees said they would return for a similar experience.
This year’s edition aims to elevate the concept further through a luxury black-tie setup inspired by international Las Vegas-style concert productions.
The event runs from 3 PM to 10 PM at the Sarit Expo Centre and is expected to attract lovers of jazz, soul, R&B and live instrumentation from across the region.

As Nairobi prepares for the exclusive musical showcase, Whalum had one final message for fans.
“Please don’t forget to get tickets,” he urged.
With no gate tickets expected to be sold, organisers have continued encouraging fans to secure early access before the limited slots run out.
