JKUAT Cougars celebrate during a past match/FILEThe Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Cougars will on Saturday look to end their season on a high when they face familiar rivals Mombasa RFC in the Mwamba Cup final at the RFUEA Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
Fresh from securing promotion to the Kenya Cup, the Cougars now have an opportunity to crown an impressive campaign by lifting the Mwamba Cup title. JKUAT narrowly lost 34-33 to Mwamba RFC in a dramatic KRU Championship final played three weeks ago and will be eager to bounce back with silverware.
Head coach Smith Muhoya says the team is fully focused on the challenge ahead and believes their preparations have been solid. “We will be physically and mentally ready for the challenge that Mombasa RFC will lay down. We had a friendly last weekend against Blak Blad as part of our preparations, and I believe it served us well,” said Muhoya.
“We have had good preparation. We took a couple of days off for some mental and physical rest after the gruelling KRU Championship campaign, but we are back for the Mwamba Cup,” he added.
Muhoya also praised his players for remaining committed despite balancing rugby with academic responsibilities. “Some of the players are currently doing exams, but they still sacrificed and attended all the training sessions,” he noted.
On what fans should expect in the highly anticipated final, Muhoya promised an entertaining contest built around attacking rugby. “Expect a showcase of running rugby with free-flowing attack, energy across the field and a display of what we have been working on throughout the season,” he said.
Despite JKUAT’s strong season, Muhoya insisted they will not underestimate KRU Championship side Mombasa RFC. “It’s our final game of the season, and we shall not take anything for granted,” he said.
“We just want to entertain and enjoy ourselves while at it,” concluded Muhoya. Meanwhile, Kisii RFC chairman Bob Onchong’a says the club is already strengthening its squad ahead of the upcoming National Sevens Circuit.
“We identified some players during trials two weeks ago, and they have been training with us. We are in the final stages of assessing them. Once the transfer window opens, we will sign the successful ones,” said Onchong’a.
Kisii RFC are currently training under former player George Sagini, who is being assisted by Valentine Odoyo.
