Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala is set for a titanic 100m showdown against Olympic 200m silver medallist Kenneth Bednarek, Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo and 2025 world indoor 60m bronze medallist Akani Simbine at Saturday’s Shanghai Diamond League.

Omanyala heads into the high-octane clash buoyed by a blistering start to his 2026 campaign.

The 30-year-old opened his outdoor season at the Cape Miller Continental Tour in South Africa, where he powered to victory in 10.19.

The Kenyan speedster then shifted through the gears, embarking on a dominant run of sub-10 second performances.

He ignited his charge at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 18, scorching to victory in 9.98, his first sub-10 in more than two years.

Omanyala then returned home for the Kip Keino Classic on April 24, delighting the local faithful by lowering his season’s best to 9.96 to win at Nyayo Stadium.

He shaved more time off his season’s mark two days later at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, clocking 9.95 to finish third.

However, this weekend presents arguably his sternest examination yet as he lines up alongside three of the world’s elite sprint merchants.

Omanyala has enjoyed previous success against Bednarek, famously beating the American at the 2023 Kip Keino Classic after blasting 9.84, while Bednarek settled for second in 9.98.

The American, however, returned the favour at the 2025 edition, storming to victory in 9.91 as Omanyala faded to fifth in 10.03.

Against Simbine, Omanyala will be desperate to wrest back control after the South African dominated their meetings throughout 2025.

Their first duel came at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix, where Simbine rocketed to victory in 9.90 as Omanyala settled for second in 10 seconds.

They renewed their rivalry at the Xiamen Diamond League, with Simbine again prevailing in 9.99 while Omanyala crossed second in 10.13.

In Shanghai, Simbine extended his winning streak over the Kenyan, cruising to victory in 9.98 as Omanyala laboured to ninth in 10.25.

The pair clashed again in Rabat, where Simbine triumphed in 9.95 while Omanyala clocked 10.05 for second place.

Against Tebogo, however, Omanyala has previously shown he can rise to the occasion.

At the 2023 Botswana Golden Grand Prix, the Kenyan sprint king stormed to victory in 9.78 ahead of Tebogo (9.91). He then edged the Motswana at the Monaco Diamond League, winning in 9.92 as Tebogo followed closely in 9.93.

Tebogo has also had his moments against Omanyala, beating him at the Rome Diamond League after clocking 9.87, while Omanyala finished seventh in 10.08.

Despite the star-studded field, Omanyala remains confident in his electric form this season.

“I hope to maintain the sub-10 streak and maybe later on in the season hit 9.8 seconds,” Omanyala said after a recent race. “From now it’s just about confidence building.”

Adding firepower to the Shanghai field are Americans Trayvon Bromell and Christian Coleman.

Bromell got the better of Omanyala at last year’s Rome Diamond League meeting, blazing to victory in 9.84 as the Kenyan settled for third in 10.01.

The American also denied him victory at the 2021 Kip Keino Classic, clocking 9.76 while Omanyala finished second in an African record of 9.77.

Australian speedster, Lachlan Kennedy, who won the 2025 Kip Keino Classic in 9.98 as Omanyala placed third in 10.07, is also in the mix.
