Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 68-year-old man in Namba area of Kehancha in Kuria West, Migori county.

Unknown gunmen attacked the victim on Monday night. Police said they responded to reports of gunfire and recovered five spent 9mm cartridges at the scene.

The victim was identified as Josiah Nyatondo Chacha. Police said his body had bullet wounds in the armpit.

Tension gripped the area after a group of armed and hostile residents blocked officers from accessing the body, which had been locked inside a house.

During the confrontation, one unidentified person reportedly attempted to stab a police officer, forcing officers to fire into the air to disperse the crowd.

The officers later retreated to the station as tensions escalated, leaving the body at the scene for several hours before it was taken to the mortuary on Tuesday morning.

Authorities said the motive behind the killing had not yet been established.

The incident comes amid rising insecurity in the area, which has recently witnessed a surge in violent crime. Police have since deployed a special squad to pursue criminal gangs linked to the attacks.

In Khwisero, Kakamega county, police are also investigations a violent robbery in Irumbi ‘A’ village that left a 25-year-old shopkeeper and M-Pesa agent nursing a gunshot wound.

The incident occurred on Monday night in Muhaka sub-location, Kisa West location, after two masked men confronted the victim as he closed his shop at around 8.30pm.

According to preliminary investigations, the attackers accosted the trader while he was taking merchandise inside. When he attempted to resist, one of the suspects, believed to be armed with a rifle, shot him near the left collar bone.

The robbers then broke into a safe box and escaped with an unknown amount of cash believed to be proceeds from the day’s business and M-Pesa transactions.

They also stole the victim’s mobile phone, which had been left charging in the shop, before fleeing on a waiting motorcycle.

The injured man was rushed to Yala Level IV Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
