Asumbi, last year’s winners, face a daunting task from former champions Migori, Kenyenya, and Borabu.

The championship will further be used to select a team that will represent Nyanza at the national championships set for the same venue (Kisii University) from May 24 to 29.

“Preparations for the event are complete. I expect a very competitive championship. We want to select a team that will challenge for the national title since we are hosting the event later this month,” Okinda said.

Okinda, who is a physical and health education tutor at Asumbi TTC, said the winning team is expected to head to camp ahead of the nationals.

Elsewhere, the Nyanza North track and field championships will be held on May 30 in Kisumu, according to the chairman, Joseph Ochieng.

He said the county championships will be on Friday in Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Siaya.

“We are yet to identify the venue for the regionals because Moi Stadium is closed for renovations and Kisumu National Polytechnic field is not in a good state currently,” Ochieng, a World Athletics race walking judge, said.

At the same time, the Nyanza South Athletics Kenya track championships will be held at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho in Kisii County.

AK Nyanza South chairman Peter Angwenyi said the one-day championship will be held on June 6.

The two events will be used to select teams for the national athletics championships cum Commonwealth Games Trials to be held at Nyayo National Stadium from June 19 to 21.
