Amos Kiprotich wins the men's 15km road race/ HANDOUTAmos Kiprotich and Doreen Kibet emerged as winners of the Betika Iten 15km Road Race held in the famed “Home of Champions”, with both athletes delivering strong performances against a deep field of over 1,000 competitors.
In the men’s race, 25-year-old Kiprotich, who trains in Keringet, Nakuru County, claimed victory in 44:33. The race remained tightly contested through to the final stages. However, Kiprotich held his pace to secure the win.
Denis Kipkurui finished second in 44:47. Kiprono Kipkemoi followed closely in third place in 44:59. The top three were separated by just seconds, highlighting the intensity of the competition.
Kiprotich said the race played a key role in his preparation for future international events. He noted that competing in Iten exposes athletes to a highly competitive environment. He added that this helps sharpen performance levels. He also said the experience will guide his build-up for bigger races ahead.
The women’s race saw a dominant display from 23-year-old Doreen Kibet of Kapsabet, Nandi County. She won in 51:06 after taking control of the race early. She maintained her lead to the finish line.
Judy Jepnge’tich placed second in 52:00. Naomi Chemweno came in third in 52:10. Kibet’s victory marked an improvement from her runner-up finish at the Betika Kapsabet race in April.
Kibet said the Iten course is demanding and tests both physical strength and mental endurance. She described it as a true measure of an athlete’s ability. She also revealed plans to use part of her winnings to secure professional management. She said proper management will help her focus fully on training and competition.
Kiprotich and Kibet each received Sh250,000 prize money each. The runners-up earned Sh150,000 each, while third-place finishers took home Sh100,000. to The prize kitty trickled to the 10th finishers, who received Sh20,000 each.
