Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu /Musembi Nzengu

Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu has said he wants to leave the constituency in “safe and competent hands” as he prepares to exit parliamentary politics ahead of the 2027 general election.

He is seeking to succeed Julius Malombe as Kitui governor.

Mulu said he had set a high development benchmark during his three terms in office and needed a successor capable of sustaining the momentum.

“Kitui Central is not an ordinary constituency. Development is being felt at a different level, and that momentum must be maintained,” he said.

The lawmaker, first elected in 2013, urged residents to elect a bold and influential leader capable of lobbying for projects and defending the constituency’s interests.

“Do not replace me with a weak leader who lacks a bargaining voice and ends up undoing all we have achieved over the years,” he said.

Mulu said he would not seek a fourth term as MP but said he remained deeply invested in the constituency’s future.

He spoke at the Kitui School for the Mentally Challenged during the launch of renovation works for 13 classrooms, two dormitories, and a workshop funded through the NG-CDF.

The MP cautioned voters against electing leaders based on family ties or popularity.

“Do not support someone simply because they are your relative, son or daughter. Elect a performer who will move Kitui Central forward,” he said.

Mulu is among several leaders eyeing the Wiper ticket for the 2027 Kitui governor race.

Others linked to the contest include Enoch Wambua, Irene Kasalu, former Governor Charity Ngilu and former CS Peninah Malonza.

Also being mentioned in the race are Nicholas Mulila, Livestock PS Jonathan Mueke and theologian Musili Kauta.
