The government has commenced construction Phase II of the Machakos Affordable Housing Project, expanding on the 220 units already completed and occupied under Phase I.

The new phase, which is adjacent to the initial development, will deliver an additional 570 housing units across four 14-storey blocks, with foundation works already underway.

The project is being implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, with support from the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to ensure a secure and coordinated environment during construction.

The expansion forms part of the government’s broader affordable housing programme aimed at increasing access to decent housing while creating employment opportunities.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project reflects the government’s continued commitment to delivering impactful development initiatives across the country.

“This continued investment reaffirms a firm commitment to deliver tangible, life-changing projects to Kenyans across the country,” he said.

Phase II is expected to not only address housing demand but also provide jobs and skills development for workers involved in the construction process.

The programme integrates employment creation by engaging local labour and equipping workers with practical skills that can be applied beyond the lifespan of the project.

According to the government, the success of Phase I, which is already occupied, provided the foundation for scaling up the project.

The additional units are expected to further ease housing pressure while contributing to urban development in Machakos county.

Omollo emphasised the importance of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the project progresses smoothly and is completed on time.

“The role of security agencies in maintaining a stable and well-coordinated environment remains essential to the timely and efficient delivery of the project,” he stated.

The Machakos Affordable Housing Project is part of a wider national plan targeting the delivery of thousands of housing units in urban areas.

Through such developments, the government aims to improve living standards while also stimulating economic activity through job creation and infrastructure growth.

Construction of Phase II is ongoing, with authorities indicating that progress will continue under close supervision to ensure quality standards and timely completion.
