President William Ruto, alongside COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli and other leaders, leads Kenyans in celebrating Labour Day at Chavakali High School in Vihiga on May 1, 2026/PCS
President William Ruto led Kenyans on Friday in marking the 61st Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga County.
The national event, held at Chavakali High School, drew thousands of wananchi who turned up to commemorate the annual occasion that honours the contribution of workers across the country.
The celebrations were marked by colourful displays, including marches by workers’ unions, cultural performances, and addresses by national leaders.
Among those present were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, and Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, among other leaders.
Labour Day, observed annually on May 1, provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the role of workers in driving the country’s economic growth and development.
It also serves as a platform for addressing key labour issues, including workers’ welfare, job creation, and labour rights.
During the event, various workers’ unions and organisations took part in a parade, showcasing their sectors through themed placards, uniforms, and occupational gear.
Messages displayed highlighted issues such as fair wages, safe working conditions, inclusion of youth and persons with disabilities, and the need for strengthened labour protections.
The celebrations also featured entertainment from choirs and cultural groups, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion as attendees joined in song and dance.
This year’s event marked a notable shift, as it was held outside Nairobi, reflecting efforts to decentralise national celebrations and bring them closer to communities across the country.
