Nygel Jayaden of Thika Swim Academy in action during a recent National Championship in Mombasa/ HANDOUT Swimmers from Madagascar, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Somalia are expected to headline the National Long Course Swimming Championship scheduled for May 29 to 31 at the Kasarani Aquatic Arena in Nairobi. Kenya Aquatics (KA) Secretary General, Collins Marigiri, described the championship as a crucial event for selecting swimmers for major international assignments later in the year.
“This will be a strong meet, and our swimmers’ exposure will be tested accordingly. Having swimmers from neighbouring countries will improve the level of competition,” said Marigiri.
The Kasarani competition will also mark the first official use of Kenya Aquatics’ newly acquired Colorado System 7 timing device, alongside a new digital scoreboard and electronic starter horn.
According to Marigiri, the new equipment is expected to improve race accuracy and bring the meet in line with international standards. He added that the digital scoreboard and high-resolution finish camera will enhance the experience for swimmers, coaches and spectators, with results displayed instantly, while officials will be able to review close finishes more efficiently.
The federation said the equipment, valued at approximately Sh10 million, was sourced from Colorado in the United States through support from World Aquatics under its development programme.
For many swimmers, the championship will provide a key test ahead of major assignments later this year. Kenya is preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Youth Olympics in Dakar and the Africa Aquatics Zone Three Championship in Uganda.
The federation is expected to use performances at Kasarani to assess athletes and select teams for the upcoming competitions. Kenya Aquatics also used the announcement to highlight the opening of the World Aquatics Scholarship programme, urging top swimmers to apply.
Marigiri said hosting regular high-level meetings is vital for local growth. “Regular competition gives swimmers a chance to improve times and gain race experience. This championship offers a strong field and an opportunity to measure progress against the best from our neighbours,” he said. Preparations for the event are ongoing, with the local organising committee working to ensure the facility and competition setup meet the required standards.
