Kenya is set to host the 2026 Rugby Africa Cup Division One tournament at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi from May 21 to May 31, in a major boost for the country’s growing reputation as a premier destination for international rugby events.

The ten-day competition will feature a round-robin format, with hosts Kenya set to face continental heavyweights South Africa (defending champions), Uganda, and Madagascar in a highly competitive battle for regional supremacy.

Speaking on Tuesday, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chief Executive Officer Thomas Odundo said the awarding of hosting rights is a strong endorsement of Kenya’s capability to stage world-class tournaments.

“It shows we are on the right track in hosting world-class tournaments. We recently played host to the HSBC Sevens in February at Nyayo Stadium, the Africa Cup Sevens last November, the Junior World Rugby Trophy in 2024, as well as the Barthes Cup in 2022 and 2023,” said Odundo.

He added that Kenya’s consistent delivery of major rugby events continues to strengthen its standing within global rugby structures.

The Kenya Lionesses, who have finished second behind South Africa in the last two editions of the competition, will be aiming to finally claim the title on home soil.

Head coach Simon Odongo has already named a 48-player provisional squad, which underwent an alignment camp in March, with preparations set to intensify ahead of the tournament.

“Our preparations go into top gear from next week. Playing at home will be an advantage, and we are looking at giving something to the fans to celebrate by winning against quality opposition,” said Odongo.
