Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on Monday staged a peaceful demonstration outside Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, demanding immediate absorption into permanent and pensionable terms.

The teachers, drawn from different parts of the city, marched while blowing vuvuzelas and whistles, carrying banners and placards with messages calling on the government to end what they termed as exploitation of qualified teachers.

Some of the placards read, “Kama ni 17k wacha wafunze na ulimwengu,” “Justice for the degree #17k kwani ni shot?” and “Enough is enough, stop exploiting qualified teachers.”

Others carried banners demanding implementation of court orders and clear career progression guidelines.

One banner read: 'No free labour for gov’t. Clear JSS teachers now. Clear career guidelines. No confirmation, no school. #Confirm 44k intern teachers.”

The teachers also listed respect for court orders among their key demands as they called for confirmation of the 44,000 intern teachers currently serving in public schools.

The protest remained peaceful as the teachers continued to press Parliament and the Teachers Service Commission to address their concerns.
