Kabarnet is set for a major transformation in its higher education landscape after Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya on Monday presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of Kabarnet University College, a constituent college of Moi University.

The project is aimed at expanding access to quality and inclusive higher education across the country, with Tuya terming it a key milestone in the government’s broader agenda to strengthen education, research, and skills development as drivers of sustainable growth.

She said the new institution is expected to develop into a centre of academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement, while also addressing infrastructure challenges that have forced academic programmes to operate from the Seretunin Campus.

Tuya noted that inadequate facilities have highlighted the urgency of establishing a modern and well-equipped learning environment for students.

The university college will be developed in phases, with Phase One focusing on core academic infrastructure including tuition blocks, a library, an auditorium, and an administration block. This phase is expected to be completed within 12 months. Subsequent phases will roll out additional support facilities in the coming financial years.

“The University College will play a vital role in nurturing future leaders, innovators, and professionals by providing an environment that supports creativity, entrepreneurship, and research,” Tuya said.

She further explained that the project brings together several key stakeholders, including the National Government, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Defence, Kabarnet University College, and the County Government of Baringo. The Ministry of Defence will also provide technical expertise to support successful implementation.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, the CS proceeded to inspect the ongoing Kabarnet Stadium project, which is also being implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence.
