President William Ruto continued his development tour in Murang’a County, where he inspected the construction of the Ciumbu Modern Market in Maragua.

During the visit on Saturday, the Head of State reviewed progress at the site and expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction.

He was accompanied by leaders, including his Deputy Kithure Kindiki and Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome.

He noted that the project is part of a broader national programme aimed at improving trading conditions for informal sector workers, commonly referred to as mama mboga and small-scale vendors.

Ruto said the government is constructing 25 modern markets across Murang’a County, with a total investment of about Sh2.5 billion.

He added that the initiative forms part of a nationwide plan involving 600 markets under development across the country.

"Nationally, 600 markets are underway, fulfilling our commitment to provide mama mboga and other traders with decent places of work," Ruto said.

The Ciumbu Modern Market, located in Maragua Constituency, is among projects expected to transform local trade once completed.

According to the government, the facility will accommodate more than 200 traders, offering improved working conditions, sanitation, storage facilities and organised trading spaces.

The President’s tour of Murang’a has also focused on other development projects, including affordable housing initiatives.

He reiterated that the government remains committed to completing ongoing projects within set timelines so that communities can begin benefiting.
