Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has dismissed speculation linking him to “goons”, saying the label unfairly stigmatises young people who grow up facing hardship.
In an interview with NTV, Gaucho explained that the tough appearance often associated with youth is shaped by village realities and urban struggles.
“It is the situation people go through when growing up,” he said.
“Eating miraa to forget you have not eaten, or that you have not paid rent, or that you are not married, these things make someone’s face look hard. So when people see you, they call you goons.”
He argued that the stigma comes not from the youth themselves but from leaders entrusted with power.
Gaucho said it is the leaders they have chosen who have failed to empower young people and that they are the ones who give them “rungu”.
“Those who make young people be called goons are the leaders that Kenyans have given positions in leadership,” Gaucho stated.
Gaucho rose to prominence through street activism, often speaking at Bunge la Mwananchi forums and mobilising ordinary citizens.
He became known as a die-hard supporter of the late Raila Odinga, defending the opposition leader during protests and public debates.
Gaucho was recently appointed as a member of the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Board.
Gaucho said he was deeply humbled by the appointment, describing it as a turning point in his life and a vote of confidence in his leadership.
“I am deeply humbled and filled with gratitude today. I sincerely thank Governor Johnson Sakaja for this great gesture and for believing in me. Your confidence has truly opened a new chapter in my life,” he said.
He also extended appreciation to President William Ruto for the opportunity to serve, linking his appointment to the broader government agenda.
Gaucho further acknowledged the support of the family of Raila Odinga, saying their belief in him dates back several years.
The outspoken youth leader dedicated the appointment to “Wanaghetto”, crediting grassroots supporters for his rise and urging young people to remain hopeful and focused.
“Special thanks go to the family of Raila Odinga Baba and Broad-Based Arrangement, who believed in me long before this moment, and three years ago, he assured me he would speak to the President on my behalf. Today, that promise has come to life. To all the government officials who have reached out with congratulations, I am sincerely grateful. Your support means a lot,” Gaucho said.
“Above all, I dedicate this achievement to Wanaghetto, the people who have stood by me, believed in me, and lifted me up. This appointment is yours. If I can come this far, then every young person in the ghetto can rise. This is a true reflection of the Bottom-Up vision.”
