Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) affiliates and clubs have been handed 45 days to comply with requirements set by the Sports Registrar ahead of the union’s delayed elections.

KRU fixtures director, Leslie Mwangale, said only KCB has so far met the criteria, with most clubs in the Kenya Cup, Championship and Nationwide leagues yet to be cleared by the regulator.

He added that the majority of clubs have also failed to conduct elections in line with the Sports Registrar's requirements and, therefore, risk being locked out of the KRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for next month.

“It’s two ways. The clubs first must put their house in order and get new office bearers, then get compliant with the Sports Registrar if we are to conduct the AGM next month and the elections for the various positions,” said Mwangale.

He expressed confidence that clubs had already begun the process. “Most of the clubs will be going to the polls soon and then get the certificates from the Sports Registrar,” he added.

The AGM and elections had initially been slated for March but were postponed after the registrar raised concerns over compliance and governance processes.

Key positions up for grabs include vice chair, currently held by Moses Ndale, and secretary, occupied by Ray Olendo. Long-serving treasurer Joshua Aroni is set to leave after a 12-year stint, with Mwangale eyeing the position.

Governance concerns have remained a thorny issue within the union, with several Nationwide clubs reportedly demanding access to audited accounts this year but failing to receive them. The matter is expected to feature prominently at the AGM.

Meanwhile, the inaugural Rugby Schools Cup Championship is set to kick off in May. According to organiser Michael Kimemia, the competition will feature two categories.

The Under-19 division will have eight schools, open to Form Four and Form Three students, while the Cubs category will cater for Under-17 players, mainly Form Two students and junior secondary school learners.

“The aim of the tournament is development and to unearth new talent,” said Kimemia. In Pool A, Nairobi School will face Ofafa Jericho, Mangu and Githiga. Pool B features Lenana School, Moi Forces Academy, Alliance High and Strathmore.
