Detectives have arrested several individuals in connection with a reported case of robbery with violence and gang rape in Butere, following what authorities describe as a swift, intelligence-led operation.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and the Operation Action Team acted on solid intelligence to track down those linked to the incident.
The events are reported to have occurred on the night of January 28, 2026, when a group forced entry into a local shop under the cover of darkness.
Authorities indicated that the incident went beyond theft, describing it as “not just a robbery, it was an act of cruelty that left a lasting scar.”
Police said the shopkeeper was attacked during the ordeal before the group fled. The attackers are reported to have stolen goods valued at approximately Sh200,000, alongside an undisclosed amount of cash from the day’s sales.
The agency noted that the incident left behind devastation, fear, and anguish, underscoring the gravity of the case and its impact on the victim.
Following the report, detectives launched what they termed a swift and targeted manhunt aimed at identifying and apprehending those involved.
The operation led officers to Mabungo village, where two individuals were arrested.
Further investigations and questioning directed officers to Shirota village, where another person believed to be linked to the incident was apprehended.
The operation later extended to Sabatia Market, where detectives arrested an additional individual suspected to have been in possession of items believed to be connected to the robbery.
Authorities reported that a number of assorted mobile phones were recovered during the operation. The items are believed to form part of the stolen property and are currently being held as exhibits.
All those arrested are being held in custody as investigations continue and as they undergo processing ahead of their planned arraignment in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the operation reflects its continued efforts to respond to serious crimes through coordinated intelligence work, while ensuring that due process is followed.
The case remains under active investigation.
