Among a growing group of young Kenyan artists, Zetech University student Shady Luopin navigates both academic life and a developing music career. Insights into his journey, creative process, and the realities of the industry emerged during a recent interview with Nancy Achieng.

From Passion to Practice

Luopin traces his interest in music back to his upbringing. In his home, music was always present, creating a strong, early influence.
“Music started as a passion… I grew up in a household where music was most of the time.”
He did not pursue formal music education. Instead, he has relied on practice and lived experience to shape his skills. While initially balancing music with school as a side activity, he says it is steadily becoming a more central focus.

Challenges Behind the Scenes

Luopin points to financial strain, consistency, and brand-building as some of the biggest challenges artists face away from the spotlight.
“It’s not just about making music; it’s about marketing, staying relevant, and pushing through when things aren’t moving fast.”
Industry snapshot:
  • Many Kenyan artists operate independently, often funding their own recordings and visuals.
  • Streaming platforms have lowered entry barriers but increased competition.
  • Visibility now depends heavily on consistent releases and online engagement.

Managing Pressure and Responsibilities

Balancing education, personal expenses, and music requires discipline, according to Luopin.
“Sometimes you have to make sacrifices and stay focused on the long-term vision.”
He notes that pressure is constant but can also serve as motivation to remain consistent and improve output.

“Fans should expect more consistency, better visuals, and music that connects on a personal level.”
He also encouraged listeners to continue streaming his EP ‘Legacy Ya The Black Boy’ as he prepares upcoming releases.

On Love and Music

Addressing frequent questions from fans, Luopin says relationships can coexist with a music career, though they require balance.
“Music demands a lot of time and energy… It’s important to have someone who supports your vision.”

For now, he says his main focus remains on growth and building his career.
