
A 25-year-old fisherman went missing following a crocodile attack at Imran Island in Lake Victoria, Kisumu County, officials said.
According to the police, the incident was reported on April 11, 2026, at around 12:30 pm.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim was fishing at around 5:00 am when the attack occurred.
He was reportedly seated at the rear of his boat near Imran Island when a crocodile emerged from the water, attacked him, and dragged him into the lake.
The incident happened in the waters of Lake Victoria, an area known for frequent human-wildlife conflicts involving crocodiles.
Search and recovery efforts are ongoing, with officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) assisting in tracing the victim’s body.
The search continued on Monday, local officials said.
Such incidents are common in the waters. Dozens of fishermen are killed in such tragedies annually, in a worrying trend. KWS has been taking measures to address the menace.
Authorities have urged fishermen in the area to exercise caution while operating in crocodile-prone zones as investigations into the incident continue.
In a different incident, a 47-year-old man was found dead in a water-filled quarry in Ndhiwa Sub-county, Homa Bay county.
The body of Peter Ogola Orwa was discovered at Ngere Village in Wachara Sublocation, North Kabuai Location, after being spotted partially submerged in the water.
Police officers visited the scene and confirmed the incident. Members of the public, with the help of the police, retrieved the body.
The deceased was identified by his wife, who said he had left their home in Rege Village, Nyatike Subcounty, on April 8, 2026, at around 6 am, heading to Homa Bay, but never returned.
Preliminary observations indicated that the body had no visible injuries.
The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Ndhiwa Sub-county Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
Elsewhere in Rubiru, Muranga county, a man drowned in Matunda stream.
Police said the body of James Warui Kariuki, 75, who had been suffering from a stroke, was found in the water.
The deceased is said to have been walking along the stream when he slid and drowned therein.
The body, without any visible injuries, was moved to the mortuary for autopsy.
