Two children have died, and another sustained serious injuries after a house wall collapsed on them while they were sleeping in Sondu town, Nyakach Sub-county, Kisumu County.
The incident occurred on Friday night at about 11:45 pm in Kariobangi village, East Kadianga sub-location, according to local authorities.
Area officials said the three children had been left alone in the house at the time when the wall suddenly gave way, trapping them under debris as they slept.
Two of the victims, aged about 14 and around 10, died on the spot despite efforts by neighbours who rushed to the scene after hearing screams and a loud bang.
A third child, aged around 12, survived the collapse but sustained serious injuries. She was rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.
The incident was first reported by a village elder to the area chief, who immediately alerted security agencies and mobilised emergency response.
Police officers from Maraboi Police Station visited the scene alongside local administration officials to assess the situation and begin investigations into the cause of the collapse.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to Bethlehem Mortuary for preservation as investigations continue. Authorities also documented the scene for further forensic assessment.
Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Orina Dawin called on residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure smooth and thorough investigations.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any structural or environmental risks that could endanger lives in their neighbourhoods.
Residents described the incident as devastating, raising concerns about the safety of some houses in the area, particularly during the rainy season when weakened structures are more likely to collapse.
Authorities are yet to establish the exact cause of the wall collapse.
